Welcome to the INSILICO Roleplaying System. Everything might look a bit complicated to begin with, but don't panic! Hopefully you can find the answers to your questions on this page, or on the related site and forums for INSILICO, at insilico.marzradio.com. Incidentally, if you haven't registered there yet, now might be a good time to go and do that.
If you are looking for help with creating your character sheet using the in-game terminal, please visit this link for help
If you are looking for the in-character section of the roleplaying system on the web, this is here.
It is worth noting again that use of this system is entirely optional for use in INSILICO but certain events may require it at the discretion of the organisers.
For an in-depth discussion of the roleplaying system, please see the Roleplaying System Forum on the site.

The I1 HUD, or I1, comprises of a dice roller and live combat meter, with a number of features. We use a hypothetical character, an artificial life form named Procyon in this example below. This is what Procyon's HUD looks like right now:
The text in the upper left of the HUD is related to the character and their attributes. When a character is loaded in, this displays the character's name - in our example above, the character's name is Procyon.
Clicking on this text will begin to cycle through the character's details. Some of these will be attributes that can be rolled against (for example, intelligence or programming); others will be informative, such as date of birth, faction or race. If you need to cycle backwards, clicking a little further along to the right will do this (the right hand side of the text area).
The text in the upper right displays the character's currency. This might be credits, prestige, salvage or others. Some of these are accrued automatically during events or play; others might be attributed through discoveries or rewards. Some of them can be spent in various ways, or traded with others. Clicking here will cycle through the currency types and how much of each you have.
Below the visible HUD is another text area which may display information from time to time. This display is temporary and will disappear from view after 30 seconds. If you load a character in, or the meter loads live combat state, it will let you know.
In the middle of the meter there are four bars: health, shield, stamina and oxygen, from left to right. Overlaid on the bars are their respective current values on the left, and maximum possible values on the right. In our example above, our character has 45 health points of a maximum 60. Different characters may have different maximum values for these.
Typically a regenerating resource, health is critical to your survival. If you reach zero points, your character will be immobilised until healed, or for a certain "time out", after which you will recover a small amount of health and can resume play.
A non-regenerating resource that can be accumulated and will absorb projectile damage ahead of your health.
A slowly regenerating resource that is consumed when running or jumping. Healing someone will consume some of your stamina
Not all races require oxygen, but for those that do, it is a precious resource. Running out of oxygen will cause your health to drop rapidly, and no amount of shielding will help. Some areas are oxygen rich (the city, for example), but some regions will drain your oxygen unless you have your own supply
d100
) against the currently selected
attribute. If no attribute is selected (i.e. just the character
name is displayed), then it will just roll a d100
./11 trip
to reset the trip odometer), bearing, velocity and neural load (an encoded measure of sim "lag"). You can use the command /11 autoaux
to automatically cycle through these every few seconds. Issuing the same command again will stop the autocycle. The dice can be rolled in several ways:
When a dice roll occurs, the values will appear in the HUD's text display,
and in the chat window, irrespective of where the dice roll has come from
(chat, HUD or external). In the examples below, both of these result
from selecting Security
in the HUD by clicking on the
character name a few times, and then clicking the ⚂ icon. The same
response in the chat window and the HUD would have arisen if it was from the
chat interface:
At any point once your character sheet has been loaded in, you can use the HUD to roll dice.
d100
The HUD listens on channel 11 for commands. To roll a dice, use the roll
command.
d100
As this is the default dice, to roll against a d100
, just
enter the command roll
on channel 11:
/11 roll [23:43:08] I1 Dice: Procyon rolls 96 (1-100)
d-any
Passing a number to the roll
command will roll against that
dice. For example, to roll against a "standard" d6:
/11 roll 6 [23:43:31] I1 Dice: Procyon rolls 3 (1-6)
Specifying an attribute will roll against that attribute if it is possible. For example, to roll against programming skill:
/11 roll programming [23:46:21] I1 Dice: Procyon rolls 11 (1-100) against programming [60]: natural critical success
Here, our character critically succeeded, and this is indicated in the chat window too.
You can also request to roll against your best attribute in a tree. This can be situationally useful. For example, if one has a high biotech skill, like the character Tae Westing in this example, then the command:
/11 roll tree medical
may result in something like this:
[02:32:02] I1 Dice: Tae Westing rolls 32 (1-100) against biotech [75]: success
Most rolls are recorded against your character so you can see what your progression has been, along with where the roll was made. There's also some general roll information recorded too so you can see the proportions of successes and failures. You can reach this by scrolling to the end of your web character sheet, accessible by clicking the ? icon on the HUD.
Note that commands should be issued on channel 11, so use the following syntax in your chat window to access them:
/11 commandname options
where commandname
is the name of the command you want to
issue, and options
are any options that may or should be
specified along with it.
stats
Reports your character sheet to you (only) in the chat window. (Note: it might truncate a little of your faction information off the end but this is easily viewed on the web via the ? icon. An example for our Procyon character:
/11 stats [23:47:37] I1 Dice: [ Procyon ] Rank: Faction: Division: DOB: 2436-01-17 (age 52 years 0 months) Race: AI Gender: Neutral Serial: [ Attributes ] Intelligence: 30 Perception: 20 Endurance: 20 Agility: 15 Strength: 30 Charisma: 0 Notes: -5 Charisma from Artificial bonus [ Skills ] Knowledge: 50 Programming: 60 Medical: 45 Science: 50 Mathematics: 60 Social: 35 Teaching: 60 Subterfuge: 20 Hacking: 20 Security: 50 Tech: 50 Repair: 25 Vehicular: 35 Intuition: 25 Initiative: 35 Luck: 2 Willpower: 2 Recovery: 0 Health: 60 Mental: 60 Dodge: 35 Movement: 8 Damage Types: Notes: -5 Charisma from Artificial bonus 25 Repair from Artificial bonus 10 Health from Artificial bonus; 10 Mental from Artificial bonus; 8 Movement from Artificial bonus
reset
Resets the meter to a "just attached" state. This will load your default character, if available. Note that a reset will not reset your character sheet (you need to speak to an admin once you've completed the setup of your character to do that) or disable or destroy your character(s).
status
Gets the live meter status of nearby characters (including your own). This will consist of a username and character name, if loaded, and health, stamina, shield and oxygen values, along with the avatar ID of the username.
/11 status [23:58:20] I1 Dice: username: response [Procyon] health=60.000000/60 stamina=100.000000/100 shield=20.000000/100 oxygen=100.000000/100 (avatar uuid)
roll
Rolls the dice. This has already been covered elsewhere, but a short recap:
/11 roll
- rolls a d100/11 roll 20
- rolls a d20/11 roll tech
- rolls against intelligence. You
could replace tech
with any other "rollable" stat/11 roll initiative
- initiative roll/11 roll social [00:03:05] I1 Dice: Procyon rolls 95 (1-100) against social [35]: failure
/11 roll initiative [00:03:27] I1 Dice: Procyon - initiative roll 5 (1-35)
list
Lists the characters you have available to play, for example:
/11 list [00:09:11] I1 Dice: The following characters are available: - Procyon - Jane Lane
setchar
or char
Loads in the specified character, for example:
/11 setchar Jane Lane
will load the character Jane Lane/11 char Procyon
will load the character ProcyonThis has the same effect as using the ✓ icon in the HUD
nearby
This command will relay to you in (( OOC ))
each character that is nearby. Please remember that you can only use this information as an aide memoir, and avoid metagaming with this information - you only know a character's name if your character knows their name!
playdead
This command will play the "death" animation, so you can appear to be incapacitated if this suits what your character is doing
str2hex
and hex2str
Using str2hex
will convert the text following the command into hexadecimal, and vice versa for hex2str
:
/11 str2hex hello world [02:22:37] I1 HUD: 68656C6C6F20776F726C64 /11 hex2str 6865 6c6c 6f20 776f 726c64 [02:23:25] I1 HUD: hello world
Accepted synoyms for hex2str
are str
, string
and unhex
. You can use hex
as a synonym for str2hex
reputation
To find out the currently-loaded character's reputation with a particular faction, use this command.
/11 reputation Underground [02:26:20] I1 HUD: Your reputation with Underground currently stands at 10
advon
and advoff
This enables or disables the advanced mode of the HUD, to aid much more complex scenarios. Note that if you are involved with a moderator-organised scene that requires you to use this, it will become available. Otherwise, this command will not operate
(build 333 onwards) The HUD now has
a feature allowing you to use your character's name in conversation or
emotes, reminiscent of the extremely useful RPTool. To access this
feature, use /3
.
Usage is hopefully straightforward. The default behaviour is that it will
function as more or less a straight trade with the usual /me
command, so for example:
/3 picks up the phone
will be rendered as:
I1 HUD: Procyon picks up the phone
Using it with a :
immediately following it will present the
text more as though it was said without using the /me
:
/3: It wasn't the first time Procyon had seen criminals argue about synthetic kittens.
will show as:
I1 HUD: Procyon: It wasn't the first time Procyon had seen criminals argue about synthetic kittens.
(build 345 onwards) The HUD has a few options to change the interface to suit your own needs. on channel 12. The default smaller HUD may be enlarged using the command:
/12 scale larger
Repeating this command will continue to increase the size to the limit SL allows. To reduce the size, similarly:
/12 scale smaller
There is also a 1024x1024 texture available for the font the HUD uses, which might be preferable from the 512x512 version used by default. The difference with the default HUD scale is very slight. To set the font to the high-resolution version:
/12 font high
To set the font back to the default size:
/12 font normal
The hinting colour around the HUD is usually based on the character's race. To change this from the default and use your own colours, you can use this syntax:
/12 color <r,g,b>
where <r,g,b>
is a colour vector, with r
, g
and b
being red, green and blue values respectively, ranging from 0 to 1
/12 color <0.5, 1, 0.8> # sea green /12 color <1, 0, .8> # pretty hot pink /12 color <1,1,0> # yellow
To revert the hinting colour to the class default, use:
/12 color default
Note that "clear" and "none" can be used instead of "default".
Since build 348, these features and more are also accessible via the … menu. Clicking this ellipsis will bring up options for colour, texture and resizing. Note that some textures may only be available if you are part of a particular faction, and there are rumours that others may be accessible, somehow...
(build 347 onwards) You can use channel 15 to record a short message in your personal log. If you make an entry with:
/15 I can't believe I never started a personal log sooner!
then this will be recorded along with your current position and the
time in the database. If you already use the messenger from the HUD
then it is located at the same web pages
at http://isrps.marzradio.com/web_index.php. Note
that to view the pages, you
